Character Auto Completion sample application that is included with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition SDK 1.7 throws an error when you click Clear in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 (841766)

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Character Auto Completion sample application that is included with Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Software Development Kit (SDK) 1.7, HRESULT error 0x80004005 may be thrown when you click Clear.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the RecognitionResult object that is returned is associated with an empty strokes collection. The call to the AlternatesFromSelection function returns HRESULT error 0x80004005.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Install Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2002 (English).
  2. Install Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Multilingual User Interface (MUI) & Recognizer Pack or Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Recognizer Pack to install the Japanese recognizer.
  3. Upgrade to Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005.

    This is included with Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  4. Install Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Software Development Kit (SDK) 1.7.
  5. Start the Character Auto Completion sample application.
  6. Ink several strokes, and then quickly click Clear.

    You may receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
