How to install key products from the MSDN Enterprise subscription (841706)

INTRODUCTIONThis step-by-step article describes how to set up a computer for development to use some of the key products that are available in the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Enterprise Subscription. Note The information in this article applies to the MSDN Enterprise Subscription. back to the topRequirementsThis article assumes that you are familiar with the following topics: - General familiarity with how to install Microsoft applications.
The following list outlines the recommended hardware, software, network infrastructure, and service packs that you need: - Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
back to the topInstall key products from the MSDN Enterprise SubscriptionTo set up a development environment by using the products that are available from the MSDN Enterprise Subscription, you must install Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Developer Edition before you can install Microsoft SQL Server Developer Edition. back to the topInstall Visual Studio .NET- Insert the CD-ROM that is labeled Visual Studio .NET Disk 1 in your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.
- The Visual Studio .NET Setup window appears. Click 1 Visual Studio .NET Prerequisites.
- Insert the CD-ROM that is labeled Visual Studio .NET Prerequisites.
- The End User window appears. Accept the agreement to continue.
- The Visual Studio .NET Prerequisites Setup window appears. The Setup Wizard detects which components you must install before you can install Visual Studio .NET. Click Continue.
- The Optional Automatic Log On window appears. Click to select the Automatically log on check box, and then type your user name and password.
- Click Install Now.
Note This option appears only if you install the application on a computer that is running Windows 2000 because this is the only operating system that requires you to restart the computer to install components during the installation process. - The Visual Studio .NET Prerequisites Summary window appears. Click Done.
- The Visual Studio .NET Setup window appears. Click 2 Visual Studio .NET.
- Insert the CD-ROM that is labeled Visual Studio .NET Disk 1.
- The Visual Studio .NET Setup - Start Page window appears. Locate the product key on the CD-ROM.
- Type the product key, and then accept the End User License Agreement (EULA). Click Continue.
- The Visual Studio .NET Setup - Options Page window appears. Accept the default items to install. These items include the Microsoft .NET Framework SDK and Documentation.
- Click Install Now. The Visual Studio Setup - Install Page window appears, and Setup begins to install Visual Studio .NET.
- Insert the CD-ROM that is labeled Visual Studio .NET Disk 2 as the Visual Studio .NET Setup wizard prompts for the disk.
- After the Setup program is complete, the Visual Studio .NET Setup window appears. Click 3 Product Documentation.
- Insert MSDN Library Disk 1, Disk 2 and Disk 3 to install the MSDN Library as the Setup wizard prompts for each disk.
- Follow the instructions on the screen until the installation of the MSDN Library is complete.
- The Visual Studio .NET Setup window appears. Click 4 Service Releases.
- Install any service updates.
back to the topInstall SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition- Insert the SQL Server 2000 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive or the DVD drive on your computer.
- The SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition Setup window appears. Click SQL Server 2000 Components.
Note If the window does not appear, explore the SQL 2000 CD-ROM to locate the Autorun.exe file, and then double-click Autorun.exe to start the installation. - The Install Components window appears. Click Install Database Server.
- The Welcome window appears. Click Next.
- The Computer Name window appears. Accept the defaults, and then click Next.
- The Installation Selection window appears. Accept the defaults, and then click Next.
- The User Information window appears. Type your name and your company name in the text boxes, and then click Next.
- The Software License Agreement window appears. Click Yes to accept the agreement.
- The Installation Definition window appears. Accept the defaults, and then click Next.
- The Instance Name window appears. Click to select the Default check box for the default installation, and then click Next.
- The Setup Type window appears. Click to select the Typical option for a typical installation, and then click Next.
- The Services Account window appears. Accept the defaults, and then click Next.
In this window, you select whether you want to run SQL Server under a specified account or as the local system account. In this case, you select the option to run SQL Server under the local system account. However, if you want to use additional SQL Server features, such as Data Replication, you must assign to the service an account that has administrative rights. - The Authentication Mode window appears. Under Choose the authentication mode, click Mixed Mode.
- Type a strong password for the administrator. Click Next to continue.
As with the previous option, the option that you select in this window is specific to your environment. In a developer testing environment, select Mixed Mode so that you can use both Windows Authentication and SQL Server Authentication in your code. - The Start Copying Files window appears. Click Next to continue.
- After the appropriate files are copied and installed, click Finish to complete the installation.
back to the topVerify the installationsVerify the Visual Studio .NET installation- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, and then click Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003.
- Visual Studio .NET 2003 starts.
back to the topVerify the SQL Server 2000 installation- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Enterprise Manager.
- The SQL Server Enterprise Manager starts.
