You receive Event ID 958, and outbound or inbound messages are not delivered from an Exchange 2000 Server to their destination (841666)


The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

On your Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server computer, outbound or inbound messages may not be delivered to their destination. Additionally, the following event appears in the application log in Event Viewer:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MSExchangeTransport
Event Category: (1)
Event ID: 958
Description: Following master server DN appears to be pointing to a deleted object. This may prevent Exchange Routing Service from functioning properly.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you remove the Exchange 2000 Server routing group master and do not designate another Exchange Server computer to be the routing group master.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must designate another Exchange Server computer to be the routing group master. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  2. Right-click your Exchange organization, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, click to select the Display routing groups check box, and then click OK.
  4. Expand Administrative Groups, expand AdministrativeGroupName, expand Routing Groups, and then expand RoutingGroupName.

    In this step, AdministrativeGroupName is the name of your administrative group, and RoutingGroupName is the name of your routing group.
  5. Click Members.

    In the right pane, the Exchange Server computers that are in this routing group are displayed. In the Server Type column, the Exchange Server computers in this routing group are displayed as either Master or Member
  6. Right-click the Exchange Server computer that you want to designate as the routing group master, and then click Set as Master.
  7. Quit Exchange System Manager.
