How to configure the Internet Mail Service to use ETRN in Exchange Server 5.0 (841574)

INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to enable the ETRN command in conjunction with a dial-up connection in Microsoft Exchange Server 5.0. When you do this, you can send and receive e-mail messages through your Internet service provider (ISP).

In some scenarios, you might have a dial-up connection such as an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) connection that is configured to your ISP. In this scenario, you may want to use the ETRN command in Exchange to retrieve e-mail messages at certain intervals.

Note You cannot retrieve e-mail messages by using the ETRN command unless your ISP supports this command.

Step 1: Configure the Windows NT Server 4.0-based computer to use DNS

To configure the Domain Name System (DNS) information on the Windows NT Server 4.0-based computer that is running Exchange Server 5.0, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
  2. Click the Protocols tab, click TCP/IP Protocol, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the DNS tab.
  4. In the Host Name box, type the name of your computer as it appears in the DNS namespace. The default DNS host name is the same as the computer's network basic input/output system (NetBIOS) name after the removal of the sixteenth hexadecimal character. However, you may want to configure a host name such as "mail".
  5. In the Domain box, type the domain that your computer's host name appears under in your DNS namespace. For example, type contoso.com.
  6. Under DNS Service Search Order, click Add, type the IP address of your DNS server, and then click Add.
  7. Click the WINS Address tab, click to select Enable DNS for Windows Resolution check box, and then click OK.
  8. If you receive the following message, click OK:The new Internet host name is different than the computer name currently in use. You computer will now be known by one name on your local area network, and by another name on the Internet.

    If the computer name is ever changed, it will overwrite this new host name and the changes will be lost.
  9. Click Close, and then click Yes on the following message that appears:You must shut down and restart your computer before the new settings will take effect.

    Do you want to restart your computer now?

Step 2: Configure a dial-up connection to your ISP

You must have dial-up networking installed and you must have a phone book entry configured to connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) before you can configure Exchange Server 5.0 to use ETRN to connect to the ISP. Note After you install any networking components such as Remote Access Service (RAS), reinstall the latest Windows NT 4.0 service pack.

Step 3: Install the Internet Mail Service in Exchange Server 5.0

Install the Internet Mail Service in Exchange Server 5.0. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start the Exchange Administrator program. To do this, click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click Microsoft Exchange Administrator.
  2. If you are prompted to connect to a server, type a period (.) in the What server do you want to connect to box, and then click OK.
  3. On the File menu, point to New Other, and then click Internet Mail Service.
  4. If you receive the following message, click OK:Connections cannot be created in the selected parent container. Do you want to switch to the "Connections' container of the site 'SiteName'?
  5. In the Internet Mail Wizard, click Next, read the prerequisites for the installation of the Internet Mail Service, and then click Next.
  6. In the Select the Microsoft Exchange server in your site to install the Internet Mail Service list, click your Exchange Server 5.0 computer, click to select the Allow Internet mail through a dial-up connection check box, and then click Next.
  7. In the Select a phone book entry from the RAS phone book on the selected server list, click the phone book entry to connect to your ISP, and then click Next.
  8. Click Route all mail through a single host, type the IP address of your ISP's e-mail server, and then click Next.
  9. Leave the All internet mail addresses. (Typical) option selected, and then click Next.
  10. Type the proxy address that you want your Exchange users to use, and then click Next. For example, type an e-mail proxy address such as @contoso.com.
  11. Click Select a mailbox or distribution list, click Select, locate a mailbox to store non-delivery report (NDR) delivery status notification (DSN) messages, click OK, and then click Next.
  12. Type the Exchange Server 5.0 service account password in the Password box, click Next, and then click Finish.
  13. When you are prompted with the following message, click OK:A process has been started to update the Recipient E-mail Addresses.
  14. When you are prompted with the following message, click OK:The Internet Mail Service has been successfully installed and started!

    For optimum performance it is recommended that you run the Microsoft Exchange Performance Optimizer on server ServerName.

    To continue additional options, open the Internet Mail Service (ServerName) in the Configuration container using Microsoft Exchange Administrator program.

Step 4: Configure the Internet Mail Service in Exchange Server 5.0

Configure the Internet Mail Service to automatically connect to your ISP and to use ETRN to retrieve e-mail messages. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In the Connections container, double-click Internet Mail Service (ServerName).
  2. Click the Dial-up Connections tab.
  3. Under Dial, configure the interval that you want the Internet Mail Service to connect to your ISP to deliver and retrieve e-mail message. For example, click Every, set an interval of 0 hours and 15 minutes, and then click to select the All day check box.
  4. Click Mail Retrieval, click Retrieve mail using ETRN, and then click OK.
  5. Click Logon Information, type your account information in the Logon Information dialog box, and then click OK.
  6. Click OK, and then click OK when you are prompted with the following message:The Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service must be restarted for your changes to take effect. Stop and start the Internet Mail Service using the Services icon in Windows NT Control Panel.
  7. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  8. Double-click Services, click Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service, and then click Stop.
  9. When you are prompted with the following message, click Yes:Are you sure you want to stop the Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service service?
  10. When the Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service has stopped, click Start.
  11. Click Close to quit the Services Control Panel tool.
