Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Because of file dependencies, this software update requires Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3 (SP3).

When Exchange 2000 sends public folder update notifications, Exchange 2000 first estimates the number of users who are subscribed to a particular public folder to determine whether to use a link list or a hash table to send public folder updates. Exchange 2000 only uses the users who are subscribed to the particular public folder when it makes this calculation. However, Exchange 2000 should also consider the users who are subscribed to the parent folder or to the root public folder when Exchange 2000 makes this calculation. Therefore, Exchange 2000 may incorrectly use a link list to send public folder updates instead of a hash table if all the following conditions are true:

The public folder server is under a heavy load.
There are many users who are subscribed to the parent public folder of a folder that Exchange 2000 is parsing.
A particular timing condition occurs

If Exchange 2000 does not consider the users who may be subscribed to the parent folder or to the root public folder, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may stop responding while it generates public folder update notifications.
