Support may not be available if you modify tables or stored procedures in SharePoint Portal Server or Windows SharePoint Services databases (841057)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
- Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services
INTRODUCTIONThis article describes a situation in which a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services database may not be supported. The WSS product team does not recommend that you edit your WSS content database.
The few exceptions that have been made to this rule were made in extreme circumstances in which Microsoft
Support guided a customer through manipulations that are tightly constrained. This guidance was given only to solve critical
issues with the system.MORE INFORMATIONSharePoint Portal Server and Windows SharePoint Services use SQL Server or the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) as the back-end database. SQL Server provides several tools that can be used to modify
tables or stored procedures in SharePoint Portal Server and in Windows SharePoint Services. We strongly recommend that you do not use these tools to modify
SharePoint Portal Server or Windows SharePoint Services back-end databases. If you modify tables or stored procedures by using tools or procedures that are not provided by SharePoint Portal Server or by Windows SharePoint Services without being instructed to do this by PSS, PSS does not support the database. In this situation, you must perform a SharePoint Portal Server or Windows SharePoint Services database restore to be eligible for support.
PSS may provide an authorized and supported script
to fix certain problems. This script is only available for a support incident customer unless the script is published as a Microsoft Knowledge Base article or as a white paper. The support incident customer must perform a SharePoint Portal Server or Windows SharePoint Services database backup before the script is executed.
PSS does not support the calling of SharePoint Portal Server or of the Windows SharePoint Services stored procedures directly. SharePoint Portal Server and Windows SharePoint Services maintain their referential integrity primarily through the code itself and not through typical database mechanisms. Calling the stored procedures outside their typical context may cause loss of referential integrity to one or more of the underlying tables in the various databases. Additionally, PSS does not support adding new stored procedures to either the SharePoint Portal Server or Windows SharePoint Services databases.
