Failure Audit event entries are unexpectedly logged to the security event log when you search for .zip files in a Windows XP-based computer (840956)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to search for a .zip file, and the folder that contains the .zip file is configured to audit access to the files in the folder, Failure Audit event entries are unexpectedly logged to the security event log. Failure Audit event entries are not logged to the security event log if you search for files that have file name extensions other than .zip.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • The following permissions on the folder and the files in the folder are set to Deny for your user account:
    • Create Files / Write Data
    • Create Folders / Append Data
    • Write Attributes
    • Write Extended Attributes
    • Change Permissions
    • Take Ownership
  • The folder is configured to audit failure access events for the Deny permissions that are configured for your user account.
  • You search the folder for .zip files by using one of the following criteria:
    • All or part of the file name
    • A word or phrase in the file
