  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET (2003), Academic Edition
  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET (2003), Enterprise Architect Edition
  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET (2003), Enterprise Developer Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you use the IXMLDOMDocumentPtr smart pointer in the code that is generated when you import the Mmsxml4.dll file in your project in Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, the IntelliSense feature for the smart pointer does not work.

CAUSE

The IntelliSense engine cannot correctly interpret the smart pointer definitions.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, type the typedef for the smart pointer in your pointer declaration. Instead of declaring your smart pointer like this:
MSXML2::IXMLDOMDocumentPtr pXMLDoc = NULL;
You can declare your pointer by using the typedef:
_com_ptr_t<_com_IIID<MSXML2::IXMLDOMDocument, 0x0> > pXMLDoc = NULL;

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
