Replace a network adapter

To replace a network adapter on a computer that is running ISA Server 2004, follow these steps.

Note We recommend that you disconnect the computer from the Internet when you replace any network adapters that are part of the internal network because the firewall is stopped and the computer may be vulnerable to attack during this time.
  1. Stop and disable the ISA Server services. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
    2. In the list of services in the right pane, double-click Microsoft Firewall.
    3. In the Startup type box, click Disabled.
    4. In the Service type area, click Stop.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Repeat steps b through e for the following services:
      • Microsoft ISA Server Control
      • Microsoft ISA Server Job Scheduler
      • Microsoft ISA Server Storage
  2. Remove the network adapter you are replacing. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
    2. Click Device Manager.
    3. In the right pane, expand Network adapters, right-click the network adapter that you are replacing, and then click Uninstall.
    4. Click OK.
  3. Shut down the computer.
  4. Replace the network adapter.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Log on to the computer and install the new network adapter.

Note The Microsoft Windows Plug and Play hardware-detection operation and ISA Server 2004 detect and replace most network adapters automatically, but this depends on the drivers that are associated with the network adapter.
  7. Configure the TCP/IP configuration.

Note If you replace a network adapter and assign it an IP address in a range that is already included in a network object defined in ISA Server, ISA Server sees the new network adapter as part of that network.
  8. Start the ISA Server services. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
    2. In the list of services in the right pane, double-click Microsoft Firewall.
    3. In the Startup type box, click Automatic.
    4. In the Service type area, click Start.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Repeat steps b through e for the following services:
      • Microsoft ISA Server Control
      • Microsoft ISA Server Job Scheduler
      • Microsoft ISA Server Storage
  9. Open ISA Server Management and configure the new network adapter. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft ISA Server, and then click ISA Server Management.
    2. In the right pane, expand Configuration, and then click Networks.
    3. Manually configure the network and add any rules, or select a network template from the right pane to specify your new configuration.
    4. After you configure the network, you can configure firewall policy rules. For more information about configuring firewall policy rules, see the Configure Firewall Policy Rules topic in the ISA Server 2004 Help documentation.
