The mouse and the keyboard may not respond as you expect in a virtual machine in Virtual Server 2005 (840601)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Virtual Server 2005

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Virtual Machine Remote Control to run a Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 virtual machine, the mouse and the keyboard may not respond as you expect in the virtual machine. You expect that the mouse and the keyboard work correctly after you install virtual machine additions on your virtual machine.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when the display of the virtual machine is set to 16 colors. A 16-color display setting is also referred to as a 4-bit display setting.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, set the display of the virtual machine to 8 bits or more. The mouse and the keyboard work correctly when the display of your virtual machine is set to 8 bits or more if virtual machine additions are installed.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
