Remote Desktop Connection stops responding when you install or remove Virtual Server 2005 remotely (840578)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Virtual Server 2005
SYMPTOMSWhen you try to install or to remove Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 by using a Remote Desktop Connection session, you may experience the following behaviors: - The remote desktop connection stops responding (hangs). In this scenario, the remote computer does not respond to keyboard input or to mouse input.
- If you disconnect the Remote Desktop Connection session and then try to reconnect the Remote Desktop Connection session, you receive the following error message:
The client could not connect to the remote computer.
Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection.
Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator. - If you log on to the server computer where you tried to install or to remove Virtual Server, you notice that Virtual Server was installed or removed successfully.
CAUSE This issue may occur if the remote computer obtains a new IP address during the installation or the removal of Virtual Server 2005.
When you install Virtual Server, the TCP/IP stack is rebuilt on the destination computer. This causes a loss of network connectivity for a short period. Typically, you can reconnect to the remote computer by using Remote Desktop Connection. However, if the remote computer obtains a new IP address when the TCP/IP stack is rebuilt, you may not be able to reconnect. In this scenario, because the host-name-to-IP-address mappings are typically cached on the client computer, your client computer may have an incorrect DNS entry cached for the remote computer. After the entry in the DNS cache expires, you can again connect to the remote computer. WORKAROUNDTo work around this issue, flush the DNS resolver cache, and then try to reconnect to the remote computer. To do this, follow these steps: - On the client computer, click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
- Type ipconfig /flushdns, and then press ENTER.
- Run the Remote Desktop Connection tool to connect to the remote computer.
Note These steps work only if you connect to the remote computer by specifying that computer's host name in the Remote Desktop Connection dialog box. If you connect to the remote computer by using its IP address, you must specify the new IP address in the Remote Desktop Connection dialog box.
