The MSDE instance in SQL Server Service Manager appears as "Not Connected" after you install ISA Server 2004 (840554)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004, the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) instance in Microsoft SQL Server Service Manager appears as Not Connected.

Additionally, you cannot start the MSDE instance in SQL Server Service Manager, and when you click the arrow in SQL Server Service Manager to select either a server or services from the list, the list appears blank.

CAUSE

This problem occurs after you install ISA Server 2004 on any computer that has Microsoft SQL Server installed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) to start, stop, or pause SQL services. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. In the details pane, right-click an SQL service, and then click Start, Stop, or Pause.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
