Virtual machines may stop responding if you start several instances of the Virtual Server Administration Website program in Virtual Server 2005 (840520)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Virtual Server 2005
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

If you have the View or greater permission configured in Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 when you create a script to start several instances of the Virtual Server Administration Web site tool, your virtual machines may stop responding when you run the script.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because each connection to the virtual server Web site starts a new instance of the Vswebapp.exe file. These running program instances use both CPU and memory resources. If you start several instances of the Vswebapp.exe file, you may exhaust the operating system resources that are available for running virtual machines.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, limit the number of concurrent connections to the virtual server Web site. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager to start the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager tool.
  2. Expand ServerName (local computer), expand Web Sites, right-click Virtual Server, and then click Properties.

Note that ServerName is a placeholder for the local computer.
  3. Click the Performance tab, and then click Connections limited to.
  4. Type the number of concurrent connections to the virtual server Web site that you want to be permitted, and then click OK.
