SYMPTOMS
When you are using Performance Logs and Alerts (Perfmon.exe)
on a Microsoft Windows XP Professional-based computer, you may receive an
access violation error message in Smlogsvc.exe that is similar to the
following:
The instruction at "0x77f41d24"
referenced memory at "0x00000000." The memory could not be
written.
You receive this error message after you take one of the
following actions:
- You stop a counter log on physical disk use.
- You add an alert for physical disk use, and then restart
the computer.
RESOLUTION
Service pack information

Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now
available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that
is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing
this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore,
if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you
wait for the next Microsoft Windows XP service pack that contains this
hotfix.
