You cannot edit an existing document or create a new document in a document library in your Windows SharePoint Services Web site or in your SharePoint Team Services Web site (840024)

SYMPTOMS

You may find that you cannot edit an existing document or create a new document in a document library in your Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web site or in your SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft Web site. You experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • If you access a document in a document library in your Windows SharePoint Services Web site or in your SharePoint Team Services Web site, and then click Edit in Microsoft Office ProgramName, you receive one of the following error messages, depending on the version of SharePoint that you are running:
    • In Windows SharePoint Services, you receive the following error message:
      'Edit Document' requires a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible application and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater.
    • In SharePoint Team Services, you receive the following error message:
      The "Edit Document" button requires a SharePoint-compatible application and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or greater.
  • If you connect to a document library in your Windows SharePoint Services Web site or in your SharePoint Team Services Web site, and then click New Document, you receive one of the following error messages, depending on the version of SharePoint that you are running:
    • In Windows SharePoint Services, you receive the following error message:
      'New Document' requires a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible application and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater. To add a document to this document library, click the 'Upload Document' button.
    • In SharePoint Team Services, you receive the following error message:
      The 'New Document' button requires a SharePoint-compatible application and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or greater. To add a document to this document library, click the 'Upload Document' button.
  • When you connect to a document library in your Windows SharePoint Services Web site, and then click Upload Document, the Upload Multiple Files option is missing from the DocumentLibraryName Document Library: Upload Document page. You cannot click Upload Multiple Files to upload multiple files to the document library.
  • The Link to Outlook option is missing in an Events list.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if all the following conditions are true, in the order that they appear:
  • You install Microsoft Office XP or an Office XP program on your computer.
  • You install Microsoft Office 2003 or an Office 2003 program on your computer.
  • You install an Office XP service pack or update such as Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) on the computer, or you install additional Office XP components on the computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • Repair or reinstall Office 2003 the individual Office 2003 program that is experiencing this issue.
  • Repair or reinstall Office 2003.
