You have to reenter your password after you reset a Pocket PC device (840000)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Powered Pocket PC 2003
  • Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use a Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC-based device, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • When you try to connect to a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based shared resource, you receive a message to enter a password. You can save the password if you want to.
  • If you reset the Pocket PC device after you try to connect to a particular Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based shared resource, you receive a message to reenter the password the next time that you connect to the same Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based shared resource.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the security mechanisms on Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC have been updated. These mechanisms help implement more secure authentication processes. This update will typically affect users who have shared resources on a Windows NT 4.0-based computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, reenter the password every time that you try to connect to a Windows NT 4.0-based shared resource.
This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

This update may cause inconsistent behavior when you connect to some network resources. Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC-based devices do not persist credentials that use older authentication protocols.
