841606 Text that you type in Word 2003 may not appear when you use screen magnifier software or Braille display software
873356 Only the first occurrence of the NUMPAGES field is updated when you try to update the fields in the body of your Word 2003 document
841539 You cannot review all the tracked changes in a Word 2003 document
842775 You cannot underline the tab that is between the number and the text in a numbered list in Word 2003
843615 You receive the "Word did not save the document" error message when you save a Word 2003 document in DOCSOpen DMS
This hotfix package also fixes the following issues that were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article: - When you try to save a Word 2003 document that contains an AutoText entry with a List style that is included in a template that is attached to the document, Word 2003 quits unexpectedly, and you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature that is similar to the following:
Application name Application version Module name Module version Offset
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Winword.exe 11.0.5604.0 Winword.exe 11.0.5604.0 0023fd9f
- When you run a recorded Microsoft Visual Basics for Applications (VBA) macro that inserts a text watermark in a Word 2003 document, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Runtime error 5: Invalid procedure call or argument. - When you perform a mail merge in Word 2003 that merges many Microsoft Excel records to the printer, you may notice that the mail merge is significantly slower than the mail merge is in Microsoft Word 2002.
- LISTNUM fields that are nested inside IF fields are not incremented correctly when you update the fields in a Word 2003 document.
- When you open a Word 2003 document from a mapped drive by using a hyperlink, the document opens in a browser window with the title "Document in Internet Explorer". When you try to save the document, the default save location is the local My Documents folder or the last saved location instead of the original location of the mapped drive.
- When you copy a numbered style or a bulleted style by using the Organizer in Word 2003, the indent and the tab settings in the target document are different from the original indents and tabs in the source document or in the template. This problem occurs with built-in styles and with user-defined styles.
- You select a paragraph in a Word document in Word 2003, and then use
the Style box on the Formatting toolbar to change the style of the
selected paragraph. When you select a different paragraph and then
press F4 to repeat the style format, the style is not applied.
- When you type an opening quotation mark after a soft line break
(press SHIFT+ENTER), the opening quotation mark is typed as a closing
quotation mark. This issue occurs when the "Straight quotes" with
"smart quotes" option on the AutoFormat as you type tab is turned on
in Word 2003.
- When you print an organization chart in Word 2003 that contains an
elbow connector or a curved connector that connects two nodes, the
lines for the connectors may not be printed connecting the two nodes.
Instead, the connector lines may run to the top of the page from one
node, re-emerge from the bottom of the page or from the top of the page,
and then the connector line may continue to the other node.
- When you click a hyperlink that is inserted as a comment in the Reviewing task pane, the hyperlink does not work. However, if you click the hyperlink in the Comment balloon, the hyperlink works as expected.
- When you type text in a text box, the text box may not automatically resize to the text that you typed.
- When you run a VBA macro that saves a document, the wrong document is saved, Word 2003may appear to stop responding, and then you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. This issue may occur after you install the security update that is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
827653 Flaw in Microsoft Word could enable macros to run automatically
- When a VBA macro that uses
the Selection.Find property is run from another VBA macro and the
insertion point is at the beginning of a document, Word 2003 may stop
responding (hang).
- In the French version of Word 2003, if you record a macro to add a formatted watermark to a Word 2003 document, the RGB property is not recorded correctly. When you make changes to the macro, you expect the RGB property to be similar to the following:
Selection.ShapeRange.Fill.ForeColor.RGB = RGB(192, 192, 192) However, you find that the RGB property was recorded similar to the following::Selection.ShapeRange.Fill.ForeColor.RGB = RVB(192, 192, 192) - In a Word 2003 document, when you change views or scroll the document, text that may appear on the last line of a page may jump to the next page, jump back to the previous page, or occasionally not show on either page.
- When you run a VBA macro that continually calls the GetPoint function, you experience the following symptoms:
- The memory usage increases.
- The memory usage takes longer than you expect to complete.
- Word 2003 may appear to stop responding.
Note The GetPoint function returns the screen coordinates of the specified range or shape.
- After you add a custom toolbar in Word 2003, modify a style on the Style task pane, and then close the document, Word 2003 quits unexpectedly and you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

- If you run a VBA macro in a Word 2003 document that contains numbered paragraphs, you notice that list numbering for some of the paragraphs has been removed. This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
- The Word 2003 document contains an Outline numbered list.
- The VBA macro uses the ResetOnHigher property to programmatically set List level 1 to False.
- You click Open and Repair in the Open dialog box to open the Word 2003 document.
Note In the Show Repairs dialog box, you notice that repairs have been made to List level 1.
- When you programmatically move the insertion point in a document to a location that contains a Smart Tag or an AutoCorrect entry, the Smart Tag or the AutoCorrect entry blue icon does not appear. If you close the document with the insertion point in the location that contains a Smart Tag or an AutoCorrect entry, Word 2003 quits unexpectedly, and you receive the following error message:
