SYMPTOMS

When you paste a range of cells from a Microsoft Excel 2002 workbook to your slide presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint 2002, you may receive the following error message and PowerPoint 2002 may quit unexpectedly:
Microsoft PowerPoint has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you view the details of the error message, you receive an error signature that is similar to the following:

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the range of cells in the Excel 2002 workbook contains merged cells.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the Paste Special dialog box to select a different paste option such as Microsoft Excel Worksheet Object or Picture (Enhanced Metafile) to paste the cell range that contains the merged cells from the Excel 2002 workbook to your slide presentation in PowerPoint 2002.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
