Your desktop is blank after you apply the MS03-026 security patch on Windows 2000 (838861)

SYMPTOMS

After you install the MS03-026 security patch, your desktop is blank.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the R0000000000e7.clb file has a size of 0 bytes. The R0000000000e7.clb file is located in the following folder:

C:\Winnt\Registration

Note The actual drive and actual location of your Windows folder may be different from the example location.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, delete the Registration folder and then restart your computer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL, and then click Task Manager.
  2. Click the Applications tab, click New Task, and then click Browse.
  3. Locate the Registration folder.
  4. Right-click the Registration folder, click Delete, and then click Yes.
  5. Restart your computer.

    A new Registration folder is automatically created. Your desktop appears.
Note As an alternative workaround for other computers that are experiencing the same problem, you can copy the contents of the new Registration folder and then distribute the contents to those computers.
