FIX: You receive a 403.2 error message when you use an ISAPI extension .dll file as a default document (838790)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Information Services version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you try to access the http://localhost/MyVirtual directory URL, you receive the following error message:
HTTP Error 403.2 - Forbidden: Read access is denied.
Note If the default document is specified in the request, you do not receive the error message.

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true when you create a virtual directory under the default Web site:
  • The Read check box for the virtual directory is not selected, and the Execute permissions property for the virtual directory is set to Scripts and Executables.

Note To determine if this condition is true, open the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) Microsoft Management Console (MMC), and then view the Virtual Directory tab of the Properties dialog box for the virtual directory.
  • The Read check box is not selected for every file in the virtual directory.

Note To determine if this condition is true, open the IIS MMC, and then view the File tab of the Properties dialog box for every file in the virtual directory.
  • The virtual directory is using only Anonymous authentication.
  • The default document for the virtual directory is an Internet Server API (ISAPI) extension .dll file.
