SYMPTOMS
When you start Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003, if the Windows-based computer cannot obtain a valid IP address, the User Name Mapping service does not start.
Additionally, the following error messages appear in the application event log:
Event ID 8278 :User Name Mapping failed to register the following version and protocol with the portmapper : 1 TCP. You will need to restart User Name Mapping for client programs to be able to communicate with the service.
Event ID 8278 :User Name Mapping failed to register the following version and protocol with the portmapper : 1 UDP. You will need to restart User Name Mapping for client programs to be able to communicate with the service.
Event ID 8278 :User Name Mapping failed to register the following version and protocol with the portmapper : 2 TCP. You will need to restart User Name Mapping for client programs to be able to communicate with the service.
Event ID 8278 :User Name Mapping failed to register the following version and protocol with the portmapper : 2 UDP. You will need to restart User Name Mapping for client programs to be able to communicate with the service.
Although the exact Event ID may vary, these errors occur on any Windows-based operating system that has any one of the versions of Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX that are listed in the "applies to" section of this article.
