The Windows Components Wizard finish page stops responding during installation of DNS, DHCP, or WINS in Windows Server 2003 (838425)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Web Edition
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
SYMPTOMSIf your computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server
2003 has only dynamically assigned IP addresses, when you install a network
service such as the Domain Name System (DNS) service, the Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service, or the Windows Internet Name Service
(WINS) through Add/Remove Windows Components in the Add or
Remove Programs tool, you may receive a message that is similar to the
following: This computer has at least one dynamically
assigned IP address. For reliable Component Name
operation, you should use only static IP addresses. You will now have the
option to change this dynamically assigned IP address. When the
Local Area Connection Properties dialog box appears, it
contains a list of the local area network (LAN) adapters that are installed in
your computer.
If you click Configure, the
LAN Adapter Name Properties dialog
box appears and the Local Area Connection Properties dialog
box disappears. If you click OK to close the
LAN Adapter Name Properties dialog
box, the finish page of the Windows Components wizard stops responding, and the
network service installation process does not appear to have completed
successfully.
Note This problem occurs only if you click Configure
in the Local Area Connection Properties dialog
box.RESOLUTIONTo close the finish page of the Windows Components wizard,
use Task Manager to close the Windows Components Wizard. You will
notice that the network service has been installed successfully on your
computer and that the service works correctly. After you close the
wizard, you can manually set the static IP address for a specific network
adapter in the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box. To
do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to
Settings, click Control Panel, and then
double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.
- Right-click the network adapter, and then click
Properties.
- Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then
click Properties.
- Click Use the following IP address, and
then type the static IP address in the IP address
box.
- In the Subnet mask box, type the subnet
mask.
- In the Default gateway box, type the
default gateway information, and then click OK.
- Click OK.
- Close the Network and Dial-Up Connections
window.
