"Event ID: 12002" event messages appear repeatedly in the application log on Exchange Server 2003 (838414)

SYMPTOMS

On your computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, many event messages that are similar to the following are logged in the application log in Event Viewer: Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIS
Event Category: Content Engine
Event ID: 12002
Date: Date
Time: Time
User: N/A Computer: ComputerName
Description: Error 8000FFFF-80000000 occurred while processing message <> from 'Sender'.

CAUSE

Event 12002 is a generic IMAIL error. This error event may appear if a user tries to access an e-mail message that has become corrupted. Exchange Server logs this error during typical operation, even if the diagnostic logging level is set to None on the Exchange server. Therefore, the application log on your Exchange server may contain many of these events.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Exchange Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

  • SMTPSVC
  • RESvc
  • HTTPFilter
  • iisadmin

MORE INFORMATION
