Media Center recordings may be deleted when you change the recording storage location (838358)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004

SYMPTOMS

When you change the Record on drive setting to a new hard disk, and then switch back to the original hard disk, Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 may delete the saved recordings that were stored on the original hard disk.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • The available free space on the new hard disk is less than on the original hard disk.
  • The Recording Default setting Keep is set to Until Space Is Needed.
When all these conditions are true, Media Center still retains the size setting for the smaller hard disk. Therefore, if you switch the Record on drive setting back to the larger hard disk, Media Center deletes any recordings that use more than the available free space on the smaller hard disk.
