Dialog boxes display an incorrect language after you apply the Q830903 hotfix (838050)

SYMPTOMS

After you apply the hotfix that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 830903, the Local Area Connection properties dialog box may display an incorrect language on the Authorize tab.

Additionally, if you open a network folder in Microsoft Windows Explorer, and then try to open a file in that folder, the document may open as read-only or may return an error message that the file type cannot be recognized. For example, if you open a network folder over a slow link, click a file such as a Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 presentation, and then quickly double-click to open the file, the file may open as read-only.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Windows XP Hotfix Q830903 installs a version of the Xpsp2res.dll file that contains components in the English language.

Additionally, the hotfix Q830903 causes Windows Explorer to lock a file. Therefore, the thumbnail view of the document can be read and then used to populate the Details window of the Show Common Tasks folder view. After the thumbnail has been extracted, Windows Explorer may not release the file lock, and the file become read-only.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Installation information

Before you install the hotfix that this article describes, you must remove the Q830903 hotfix. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Click Change or Remove Programs.
  4. Click Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q830903.
  5. Click Remove, and then click Next.
  6. Click Finish.
After you install this hotfix, you must modify the registry to turn on the feature. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. For a per-machine policy, locate and then click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

    For a per-user policy, locate and then click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

  2. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  3. Type NoDetailsThumbnailOnNetwork, and then press ENTER.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  5. Type 1, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
