The Resource Update program may quit unexpectedly during building of a device image on Windows 2000-based systems (837992)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows CE .NET 4.2, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows 2000
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows 2000 SP1
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows 2000 SP2
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows 2000 SP3

SYMPTOMS

During building of a Microsoft Windows CE device image on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, an unhandled exception occurs in the Resource Update program (Res2Exe.exe).

CAUSE

This problem occurs because some resource files contain NULL strings. The function that is used to put these strings in the resource table of a module in Windows 2000 does not account for the possibility of NULL.

RESOLUTION

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, make sure that your localized resource files do not contain NULL entries.
