Software Installation account error when you view the program properties of a package on a child site in SMS 2003 (837700)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

If you are on a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 child primary site, and you view the program properties of a package that was created on the parent primary site, you may receive the following message if you click the Environment tab and then click another property tab:

This program has been set to use Windows NT client software installation account, but the account is not currently defined for this site. Clients will not be able to execute the program.
Do you still want to save these program properties?"

These symptoms occur with packages that use the SMS Software Installation account.

If you click Yes or click No at this message prompt, the program still executes correctly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of the method that SMS 2003 uses to obtain the site code for the package. SMS extracts the site code from the Package ID. SMS uses the site code of the package to query the site control data on the child site to determine if a software installation account has been defined.

Because site control data is not replicated down the SMS hierarchy, the package site code is different from the site code in the site control data of the child site. This scenario causes the message that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

You can ignore this message unless you receive the message while you are connected to the package source site. When you receive the message at a child site, clicking Yes or No does not affect how the package is processed.

Note Validation of the SMS Software Installation account does not occur in the domain. SMS tries to validate the account only in the site control data of the child primary site. SMS uses the site code of the package source site to validate the account.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
