MORE INFORMATION

When you convert a disk to a dynamic disk, you have to restart the computer for the following reasons:
  • You have to restart the computer the first time to tear down the basic boot volume device from the Ftdisk.sys driver and to replace the basic boot volume device with a dynamic volume device. The new dynamic volume device is handled by the Dmio.sys driver.
  • You have to restart the computer the second time for Plug and Play (PnP) to install the boot dynamic volume device. PnP cannot install the boot dynamic volume device while the volume is in use.

If you do not restart the computer the second time, you may experience unexpected behavior and data loss if you perform any more tasks that access the dynamic disk.
