How to turn on full-text search in Windows SharePoint Services on a Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer (837367)

SUMMARY

If you want to use full-text search with Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services on a Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer, you must upgrade the instance of Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (Windows) (WMSDE) to Microsoft SQL Server 2000. You must then install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a. If you want to use the Enterprise Manager to manage the SharePoint database, you must register the SHAREPOINT instance of SQL Server. After Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a are installed, you can turn on full-text search in Windows SharePoint Services.

INTRODUCTION

This step-by-step article describes how to turn on full-text search in Microsoft Window SharePoint Services on a Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition-based computer. The steps in this article can also be found in the Premiuminstallsteps.htm file on the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Technologies installation CD-ROM. To complete these steps, you must be logged on to Windows Small Business Server 2003 as the built-in domain administrator.

Upgrade the instance of Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (Windows) that is used for Windows SharePoint Services

To upgrade the instance of Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (Windows) (WMSDE) that is used for Windows SharePoint Services, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Technologies installation CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. The Autostart option may start the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Technologies Setup wizard. If the wizard does not start, click Start, click Run, locate the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then click Setup.exe.
  2. On the first page of the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Technologies Setup wizard, click Install Microsoft SQL Server 2000.

    Note If Windows Small Business Server 2003 came preinstalled on your server, your original equipment manufacturer (OEM) may have created a shortcut on the desktop that installs the Premium Technologies.
  3. When you receive the SQL Server 2000 SP2 and below message, click Continue. You will install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a later.
  4. On the Welcome page, click Next.
  5. On the Computer Name page, click Local Computer, and then click Next.
  6. On the Installation Selection page, click Upgrade, remove, or add components to an existing instance of SQL Server, and then click Next.
  7. If this is the first instance of SQL Server 2000 to be installed on Windows Small Business Server 2003, the CD-Key page will open. On the CD-Key page, type your Windows Small Business Server 2003 product key in the space that is provided, and then click Next. The product key is found on the back of the Windows Small Business Server 2003 CD-ROM case.

    Note If Windows Small Business Server 2003 came preinstalled on your server, the product key is located on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA). The COA is a multicolored label that is located on the side or the top of your computer.
  8. On the Instance Name page, click to clear the Default check box. In the Instance name list, click SHAREPOINT, and then click Next.

    Important Do not upgrade the instance of WMSDE installed for Monitoring (SBSMONITORING). Windows Small Business Server 2003 does not support this instance.
  9. On the Existing Installation page, click Upgrade your existing installation, and then click Next.
  10. On the Upgrade page, click to select the Yes, upgrade my programs check box, and then click Next.
  11. When you receive the Do you want to install additional components message, click Yes.
  12. If this is the first instance of SQL Server 2000 to be installed on Windows Small Business Server 2003, in the Components list, click to select the Management Tools check box and the Books Online check box.
  13. On the Select Components page, under Subcomponents, click to select the Full-Text Search check box, and then click Next.
  14. On the Start Copying Files page, click Next.
  15. On the Setup Complete page, click Finish.

Install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a

To install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a to the Windows SharePoint Services instance of SQL Server 2000, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Technologies CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. The Autostart option may start the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Technologies Setup wizard. If the wizard does not start, click Start, click Run, locate the CD-ROM drive, and then click Setup.exe.

    Note If you receive a message that the Scm.exe file is in use, restart your server, and then install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a.
  2. On the first page of the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Technologies Setup wizard, click Install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a.
  3. On the Welcome page, click Next.
  4. On the Software License Agreement page, read the license agreement, and then click Yes.
  5. On the Instance Name page, click to clear the Default check box. In the Instance name list, click SHAREPOINT, and then click Next.
  6. On the Connect to Server page, click The Windows account name I use to log on to my computer (Windows authentication), and then click Next.
  7. Read the Backward Compatibility Checklist message. If you must modify the SP3a security enhancements, click to select the appropriate check box. For details about each option, click Help. After you have reviewed the security enhancements, click Continue.
  8. On the Error Reporting page, click to select the Automatically send fatal error reports to Microsoft check box, and then click OK.
  9. On the Start Copy Files page, click Next.
  10. When you are prompted to back up your databases, click OK. Microsoft recommends that you complete a backup after Premium Technologies is installed.
  11. On the Setup Complete page, click Finish.

Register the SHAREPOINT instance of SQL Server

To use the Enterprise Manager to manage the SharePoint database, register the SHAREPOINT instance of SQL Server. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Enterprise Manager.
  2. Double-click Microsoft SQL Server, right-click SQL Server Group, and then click New SQL Server Registration.
  3. On page one of the Register SQL Server Wizard, click Next.
  4. On the Select a SQL Server page, in the Available servers box, type Your_Server_Name\SHAREPOINT.
  5. Click Add, and then click Next.
  6. On the Select an Authentication Mode page, click The Windows account name I use to log on to my computer (Windows authentication), and then click Next.
  7. On the Select SQL Server Group page, click Next.
  8. On the Completing the Register SQL Server Wizard page, click Finish.
  9. When you receive the Server registration completed message, click Close.
  10. Restart your server.

Turn on full-text search in Windows SharePoint Services

To turn on full-text Search in Window SharePoint Services, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint Central Administration to connect to Windows SharePoint Service Central Administration.
  2. In the Component Configuration area, click Configure full-text search.
  3. Click to select the Enable full-text search and index component check box, and then click OK.

Troubleshooting

If you receive an error message when you try to install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a to the SHAREPOINT instance of SQL Server, stop the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. Under Name, find the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service. If the service is not stopped, right-click MSSQL$SHAREPOINT, and then click Stop.
  3. After you install SQL Server Service Pack 3a, make sure that the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service restarts.
If you still cannot install SQL Server Service Pack 3a, stop all instances of SQL Server 2000, SQL Server Desktop Engine, and SQL Server Desktop Engine (Windows), and try to install SQL Server Service Pack 3a. back to the top
