"Stop 0x000000DA" error occurs on a host computer after you start a virtual machine in Virtual PC 2004 (837339)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Virtual PC 2004, and then you start a virtual machine, your host operating system may generate a "Stop 0x000000DA" error in the Vmm.sys file.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the TrackPTEs registry entry has a value of 1. The TrackPTEs registry entry is of type DWORD, and it is located in the following registry key on the host computer:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, turn off the TrackPTEs feature. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

  4. Double-click TrackPTEs.
  5. In the Value data box, change the value to 0.
  6. Restart the host computer.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
