You cannot restore a BizTalk Server 2004 master secret when you change the NetBIOS name of the master secret server (837267)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004 Partner Edition
  • Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004 Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

After you change the NetBIOS name of the Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004 master secret server to an IP address, you may notice when you try to restore the master secret does not restore.

Additionally when the master secret does not restore, Microsoft Single Sign-On (SSO) services may not be authenticated.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when all the following conditions are true:
  1. A master secret has been created and is being used by all SSO Servers.
  2. You change the NetBIOS name of the master secret server to use an IP address.
  3. Then you create a new master secret.
  4. Then you try to restore the previously saved master secret.
BizTalk Server 2004 does not recognize an IP address as a valid NetBIOS name. Because the master secret server NetBIOS name is part of the master secret, the comparison between the current master secret server name and previous master secret server name may fail when you restore the previously saved master secret. When this condition occurs SSO servers cannot identify the master secret server. This condition may cause the problem described in the symptoms section.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, change the name of the SSO server to a name that uses the standard Microsoft NetBIOS naming conventions, and then create a new master secret.

Note You must use the following standard Microsoft NetBIOS naming conventions:
  • A computer name can include up to 15 alphanumeric characters without blank spaces.
  • The computer name must be unique on the network.
  • You can use the following special characters in the computer name:

    ! @ # $ % ^ & ( ) - _ ' { } . ~

  • You cannot use the following special characters in the computer name:

    \ * + = | : ; " ? < > ,

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
