You cannot install Security Update, February 13, 2002 from the Windows Update Web site (836938)

You cannot install Security Update, February 13, 2002 from the Windows Update Web site.
CAUSE
This issue may occur if you are using a version of Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) that is later than version 2.6.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, you must temporarily change the version number settings for MDAC in the registry. You can find the version information in the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DataAccess\ Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To change the version number settings for MDAC in the registry, follow these steps: - Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
- In the navigation pane, click the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DataAccess
- Back up the DataAccess registry key.
Note This step is important, because after you make the changes to this registry key, and then you install the update, you must restore this registry key by using this registry backup file.
- On the Registry Editor menu, click Export.
- In the File name box, type a name for the backup, and then click Save. For example, name the file "DataAccess.reg," and then save the file on the desktop.
- In the details pane, double-click the FullInstallVer entry.
- Make a written note of the number listed in the Value data box. The number is similar to "2.71.9030.4," depending on your version of MDAC.
- Type 2.60.6526.3 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
- In the details pane, double-click the Version entry.
- Type 2.60.6526.3 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor, and then install Security Update, February 13, 2002. To do so, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/q317244/default.asp
- After Security Update, February 13, 2002 has been installed successfully, you must restore the registry changes to the original values. To do this, double-click the DataAccess.reg backup file that you created on the desktop in step 3, or manually edit both the FullInstallVer and Version entries by using the value that you noted in step 5.
