E-mail message moves to the Drafts folder when you try to send it by using Outlook Web Access for Exchange Server 2003 (836857)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition, Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, Service Pack 1 (SP-1)

SYMPTOMS

When you add a recipient to the To box in an e-mail message in Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access, the address appears to be resolved correctly when you click Check Names. However, when you try to send the e-mail message, the message moves to the Drafts folder. The message is not delivered.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • You are using Outlook Web Access to access a server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1.
  • In the Active Directory directory service, the recipient's display name uses the following format as part of the display name:

    [x:x:x]

    For example, the recipient's display name appears as follows:

    Lastname, Firstname [Department:City:Country]

  • When you address the e-mail message, you copy the display name of the recipient from another message, and then you paste it into the To box.
In this scenario, the Outlook Web Access client incorrectly parses the alias of the recipient.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Restart requirement

You do not have to restart your computer to install this hotfix. However, the Exchange services and the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) services are automatically stopped and then restarted during the hotfix installation.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other software updates.

Note The time and the file size of the Logon.asp file and of the Logoff.asp file will vary, depending on the language packs that you have installed. These files for other language packs have a date of August 5, 2004.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
