You cannot connect to IPv6 destinations by using tunnels over PPP devices (836790)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) on a Windows XP-based computer that uses only Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connections such as ISDN connections or dial-up connections, you cannot connect to IPv6 addresses using a IPv6 tunnel.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the computer is not equipped with a physical network adapter. The problem occurs because the internal periodic timer that the IPv6 driver uses is not started until a local area network (LAN) interface is registered.

RESOLUTION

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add Hardware, and then click Next.
  2. Click Yes, I have already connected the hardware, and then click Next.
  3. At the bottom of the list, click Add a new hardware device, and then click Next.
  4. Click Install the hardware that I manually select from a list, and then click Next.
  5. Click Network adapters, and then click Next.
  6. In the Manufacturers box, click Microsoft.
  7. In the Network Adapter box, click Microsoft Loopback Adapter, and then click Next.
  8. Click Finish.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.

This problem was first corrected in the Advanced Networking Pack for Windows XP.
