Computers may not be able to connect to the MN-700 base station by using DHCP (836514)

SYMPTOMS

Client computers may not be able to connect to your Microsoft Broadband Networking Wireless Base Station MN-700 by using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). When this issue occurs, the client computer may be assigned the IP address "0.0.0.0" after a delay of approximately one minute.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when the client computer has a computer name that exceeds the NetBIOS limitation of 15 characters.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, change the computer name of the client computer to a name that is less than 15 characters long and does not contain any special characters. To do so, follow these steps.

Microsoft Windows XP

  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.
  3. In the Computer Name box, type a name that is less than 15 characters long and does not contain any special characters, and then click OK.

Mac OS 10.4

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click Sharing.
  3. In the Computer Name box, type a name that is less than 15 characters long and that does not contain any special characters.
  4. Close Sharing
