Screen updates are slow when you use a Terminal Services client in Windows XP (836440)

SYMPTOMS

When you perform an action that requires a lot of drawing or screen updates while you use the Terminal Server client, updates to the screen may be delayed. For example, when you edit HTML messages in Microsoft Outlook or scroll in the Command Prompt window, updates to the screen may be delayed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Terminal Server client is using all the processor's resources.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not perform graphic-intensive actions while you are running Terminal Server client, or turn off the graphics hardware acceleration. To turn off the graphics hardware acceleration, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Appearance and Themes.
  3. Click Display.
  4. On the Settings tab, click Advanced.
  5. On the Troubleshoot tab, move the Hardware acceleration slider control to the third position (from the left), and then click OK.

    Note The following message describes this position: Disable all DirectDraw and Direct 3D accelerations and also all pointer and advanced drawing accelerations. Use this setting to correct severe problems with DirectX accelerated applications.
  6. Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog box.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
