FIX: Programs that are using different builds of an event and that have fixed build numbers may conflict when they register the WMI schema (836396)

SYMPTOMS

When you have two or more programs that are using different builds of an event and that also have fixed build numbers, these programs may conflict when they register the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) schema. The Managed Object Format (MOF) compiler shell may appear unexpectedly.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 service pack that contains this hotfix.
