You receive an error message when you try to update Links 2001 or Links 2003 (836187)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Links 2001
  • Microsoft Links 2003
  • Microsoft Links 2003 Championship Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you try to update Microsoft Links 2001 or Microsoft Links 2003, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Missing or invalid registry\ini entry.
Old File not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
  • You are installing an update for a different version of Microsoft Links. For example, you are installing the Links 2001 update on Microsoft Links 2000.
  • You are installing the version 1.21 to version 1.22 update on a version 1.00 installation of Links 2001.
  • Your installation of Links is damaged or is corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use the following methods in the order that they appear.

Method 1: Verify your version of Links

  1. Start Links.
  2. Click Options, and then click About.
  3. Note the version of Links that you have installed.
  4. Click OK, click Back, and then click Exit.
If you are installing an update for a different version of Links, download, and then install the correct update. To do this, visit one of the following Microsoft Web sites:Note To download an update for your version of Microsoft Links, type the name of the product that you are using in the Keywords box. For example, to download the Links 2003 update, visit one of these Microsoft Web sites, type Links 2003 in the Keywords box, and then click Go. You can also leave the Keywords box blank and then click Links from the Product/Technology drop down box which lists all the updates that are available for different Links products.

Note If you have Links 2001 version 1.00, you must update to version 1.21 before you use the 1.22 update.

Note If you have Microsoft Links Championship Edition and you received the second error message that is listed in the "Symptoms" section, you may have downloaded the wrong update.

Method 2: Reinstall Links

Your installation of Links may be damaged or corrupted. To reinstall Links, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Links 2001 or click Microsoft Links 2003 as appropriate, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Click to select the Uninstall check box.
  5. If you have any converted or custom courses or any saved games that you want to keep, click to clear the Remove user created content check box.
  6. Click OK.
  7. After Links is removed, insert the Links Disc 1 in your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive.
  8. Click Install, click Next, and then click Change.
  9. In the Path box, change the destination folder name, click OK, and then click Yes when you are prompted to create the folder.

    Note Change the destination folder name to a name that is different from the original folder name so that the program will be installed in a clean folder.
  10. Follow the prompts to install Links.
  11. Install the correct update or updates, and then start Links.
  12. Follow the steps that are listed in Method 1 to verify that the updates are installed.
  13. If you saved data in step 5, locate, and then open the Links folder.
Note By default, Links is installed in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games

Copy custom and converted courses from the Courses folder to the same folder in your new installation of Links. Copy saved games from the Games folder to the same folder in your new installation of Links.
