Symbols do not appear correctly in MapPoint (836170)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Import Data Wizard in Microsoft MapPoint to import data from Microsoft Excel, the symbols may not appear correctly on your map. For example, the symbols may all appear in one location and may not appear correctly by address.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the Country/Region data is not defined correctly in your data or during the Import Data Wizard process.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method.

Method 1: Specify the correct Country/Region data during the Import Data Wizard process

If your Excel file includes data from a single country or region, follow these steps:
  1. Start MapPoint.
  2. On the Data menu, click Import Data Wizard.
  3. Double-click the file that contains the data that you want to import.
  4. Under Choose the sheet or range you want to map, click the sheet or the range that contains the data that you want to import, and then click Next.
  5. In the Country/Region box, click the appropriate country or region, match the data types and the column headings for your data, and then click Finish.

Method 2: Modify the data in Excel

If your spreadsheet includes data from multiple countries or regions, follow these steps:
  1. Start Excel.
  2. Open the Excel spreadsheet that contains the data that you want to import.
  3. Add a column that is labeled "Country" to the data in the sheet or in the range that you want to import, and populate the cells in the Country column with the appropriate country name.
  4. Save the file, and then quit Excel.
  5. Start MapPoint.
  6. On the Data menu, click Import Data Wizard.
  7. Double-click the file that contains the data that you want to import.
  8. Click the sheet or the range that contains the data that you want to import, and then click Next.
  9. In the Country/Region box, click <Multi/Other>, match the data types and the column headings for your data, and then click Finish.
