Windows ignores the share permissions that the registry specifies after you install Windows XP SP1 (836023)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP1
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP1

SYMPTOMS

By default, when you share a folder in Microsoft Windows XP, the Everyone group only has Read permissions.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because a hotfix in Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) changed the default permissions for newly created shares to be more restrictive than in the release version of Windows XP. In the release version of Windows XP, when you create a new share, the default permission gives all users full access. After you install Windows XP SP1, when you create a new share, the default permission gives everyone Read access.
