You may receive an access violation error message when you use the DsBrowseForContainer function in Windows Server 2003 (835881)

SYMPTOMS

When you run a program that uses the Active Directory directory service DsBrowseForContainer function, the program may stop responding, and you may receive an access violation error message that is similar to the following:
The application, C: \Desktop\My Program.exe, generated an application error. The error occurred on Date and Time. The exception generated was c0000005 at address 76E05B79 (ACTIVEDS!ConvertSecDescriptorToVariant)
This problem occurs on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when all the following conditions are true:
  1. You run a program that makes a call to the DsBrowseForContainer function.
  2. You click a container object from the container list in the Browse for container dialog box, and then you click OK.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
