You may not see the bookmark brackets if a bookmark is next to a field when you turn on the Field shading option in a Word 2003 document (835714)

SYMPTOMS

When you turn on the Field shading option on the View tab (on the Tools menu, click Options) in a Microsoft Office Word 2003 document, you may not see the bookmark brackets ([]) if a bookmark is next to a field.

This article describes how to change the color of the bookmark brackets in your Microsoft Word document.

Note To turn on the bookmark brackets in your document, click Options on the Tools menu, and then click to select the Bookmarks check box on the View tab.

For more information about how to add a bookmark, click Microsoft Office Word Help on the Help menu, type bookmarks in the Search for box in the Assistance pane, and then click Start searching to view the topic.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the bookmark brackets are the same color (gray) as the field shading.

RESOLUTION

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest Microsoft Office 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

This problem is corrected in Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

After you install this hotfix, follow the steps that are listed in the "More Information" section of this article to set the BookmarkColor registry key and to activate the hotfix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
This problem was first corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 1.

To activate this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Word 2003.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. Locate, and then click to select the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options

  5. After you select the registry key that is specified in step 4, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type BookmarkColor, and then press ENTER.
  7. Right-click BookmarkColor, and then click Modify.
  8. In the Value data box, type the Hexadecimal Value for one of the colors that is listed in the following table, and then click OK:
