You do not receive a print notification when you send a print job to Windows 2000 Server (835596)

SYMPTOMSWhen you send a print job to a printer that is hosted by a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, you do not receive a print notification that the print job has completed.CAUSEThis problem may occur if you have installed the hotfix that is described in the following Knowledge Base article: 828035 MS03-043: Buffer overrun in Messenger service could allow code execution
Note This problem occurs only if the 828035 hotfix is installed on both the client and the server. This problem occurs because, after you install the 828035 hotfix, the Messenger service on the server is turned off, and the Messenger service on the client computer is turned on. WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, turn on the Messenger service on the computer that is running Windows 2000 Server. To do this, follow these steps: - Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
- In the list of services, right-click Messenger, and then click Properties.
- Click the General tab.
- In the Startup type list, click Automatic, click Apply, and then click OK.
- Right-click Messenger, and then click Start.
Note If you turn on the Messenger service, and you are not behind a firewall, you may receive unwanted messages on you computer.
