You cannot install the Automatic Update Client (835399)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Microsoft Windows Automatic Update Client, the installation does not succeed, and you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Windows Update Auto Update requires Windows 2000 SP2 or Windows XP.
Additionally, the following entries may be logged in the application log: Type: Information

The description for Event ID ( 10000 ) in Source ( MsiInstaller ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: Product: Microsoft Windows Update Auto Update -- Microsoft Windows Update Auto Update requires Windows 2000 SP2 or Windows XP., (NULL), (NULL), (NULL), (NULL), (NULL).This behavior may occur if you try to install the Automatic Update Client on any one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 3 (SP3) or later
  • Windows 2000 Server SP3 or later
  • Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP3 or later
  • Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 (SP1) or later
  • Windows XP Home Edition SP1 or later

CAUSE

The behavior occurs because the Automatic Update Client is already installed on the operating systems that are listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article. The Automatic Update Client can only be installed on the following operating systems:
  • Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Windows 2000 Server SP2
  • Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP2
  • Windows XP Professional (without SP1)
  • Windows XP Home Edition (without SP1)
