Drag-and-drop and folder sharing functionality do not work correctly on a Windows NT 4.0 virtual machine in Virtual PC 2004 (835354)

SYMPTOMS

After you install a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 service pack on a Windows NT 4.0-based virtual machine, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • Drag-and-drop functionality does not work correctly between the physical computer and the virtual machine.
  • You cannot share folders correctly between the physical computer and the virtual machine.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Windows NT 4.0 service pack contains updates that overwrite files that the Virtual Machine Additions install. Therefore, certain features from the Virtual Machine Additions, such as drag-and-drop functionality and folder sharing, do not work correctly after you install a Windows NT 4.0 service pack on the virtual machine.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, reinstall the Virtual Machine Additions in the guest operating system after you install a Windows NT 4.0 service pack.
