Content that is created by means of Windows Media Encoder 9 Series may buffer briefly when played by the WMP 6.4 embedded player (835327)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.4

SYMPTOMS

You may hear pauses in playback when you use the Microsoft Windows Media Player (WMP) 6.4 player embedded in a Web page to view content that was created by using the Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 9 Series. When the content is on the local hard disk drive, you may hear brief pauses while the player occasionally buffers the content during playback.

Note The problem does not occur when you stream media from a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Media Services 9 Series.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows Media Encoder 9 Series generates Active Streaming Format (ASF) files that are somewhat different from the ASF files that the original version of WMP 6.4 generates. The enhancements to the file that the WMP 9 Series encoder creates can sometimes cause the WMP 6.4 player to read data from the file at a different rate. This difference causes the symptoms that are described in this article.

WORKAROUND

This problem does not occur on later versions of Windows Media Player (that is, with version 7.1 and later versions).

Microsoft recommends that you use the newer class identifier (CLSID) for the ActiveX control when you embed the player in a Web page.

For more information about how to embed the Windows Media Player ActiveX control, see the Windows Media Player 9 Series Software Development Kit (SDK).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
