Additional information

After you install and activate this hotfix, you may experience the following symptom:
  • When you print a document that contains the NUMPAGES field in the header or in the footer of your document, the NUMPAGES field may print incorrectly. For example, this problem may occur with a document that contains page fields that are similar to the following:

    {PAGE} of {NUMPAGES}

When you print, the page fields may print similar to the following:

    1 of 1

    2 of 2

    3 of 3

Note When you view the document on screen, the page fields (NUMPAGES) appear correctly.
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods before you print your document.

Method 1: Turn off background printing

Note Background printing permits Word 2003 to print your document in the background. Therefore, you can continue to work in Word 2003 while your document is being printed.

To turn off background printing, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Print tab, click to clear the Background printing check box.
  3. Click OK.

Method 2: Turn on the Reverse Print Order option

Note The Reverse Print Order option prints pages in reverse order, starting with the last page of the document. Do not use this method if you are printing an envelope.

To turn on the Reverse Print Order option, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu in Word 2003, click Options.
  2. On the Print tab, click to select the Reverse print order check box.
  3. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
