SYMPTOMS

By default the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 Site Control Manager sends a scheduled heartbeat site control (.ct2) file to the SMS 2.0 Hierarchy Manager (HMAN) whenever the Site Control Manager component restarts, and every 24 hours thereafter. In large SMS 2.0 hierarchies, where the Site Control Manager component restarts frequently, the HMAN may become backlogged with .ct2 files that are waiting to be processed.

RESOLUTION

The following hotfix adds a Heartbeat Frequency registry value for the Site Control Manager. This permits you to change the default 24-hour heartbeat schedule. Permitted values range from 1 through 30. The selected value represents the number of days that the Site Control Manager waits before it sends updated heartbeat site control files. This setting also prevents the Site Control Manager heartbeat schedule from sending a site control file every time that the Site Control Manager restarts.A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Systems Management Server 2.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem.
