FIX: The initialization phase of Analysis Services database processing takes several hours to complete (833980)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services 64 bit

Bug #: 14223 (Plato7X)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 updates as one downloadable file. Because the updates are cumulative, each new release contains all the previously released updates for SQL Server 2000.

SYMPTOMS

When you use a Decision Support Objects (DSO) application (such as the DTS Cube Processing task or the Analysis Manager interface) to perform a process database operation on an Analysis Services database, the step that initializes the cube may take several hours to complete for selected cubes. However, if the cube is processed individually, the initialization step takes less than one minute.

The problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The affected cube participates in at least one virtual cube.
  • The virtual cube that contains the affected cube also contains at least one other base cube.
  • The additional base cube that is contained in the virtual cube has already been processed in the current transaction.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a locking conflict in the Microsoft Decision Support Objects (DSO) object model.
