Search results are not returned if SSL is enabled in a SharePoint Portal Server portal (833795)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Content Management Server 2002 SP1
- Microsoft Content Management Server 2002 SP1a
SYMPTOMSWhen you enable Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) access on the default Web site that hosts Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server and Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) sites, an MCMS start address that points to http://SPSPortal/Channels is added. If the PortalUrl property of the search result controls on the MCMS page is set to the SSL address of the portal (that is, if the PortalUrl property is set to https://SPSPortal), no results are returned in that MCMS search page. CAUSEThis problem occurs because the URLs of all the search results start with "https://SPSPortal" instead of "http://SPSPortal" when the search result control receives the results from the query.RESOLUTIONA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.MORE INFORMATIONYou can configure SharePoint Portal Server with the Alternate Access feature so that SharePoint Portal Server can be accessed with HTTP or HTTPS protocols on the same virtual root. In a scenario like this, you can access the same portal site over different protocols.
For example, you can access the same portal site over "http://SPSPortal" or "https://SPSPortal." You can use the Alternate Access feature to configure up to four different URLs that you can use to access the portal. With this feature, the portal can correctly build the URLs of the portal for each access URL.
The search service uses this feature to calculate the correct URL address for each portal result, depending on the URL that was used to access the portal. This means that if you access "http://SPSPortal," all the portal results start with "http://SPSPortal." Alternatively, if you access the portal that uses "https://SPSPortal," the URLs of all the portal results start with "https://SPSPortal." To locate the Alternate Access feature in SharePoint Portal Server, click SHAREPOINT CENTRAL ADMINISTRATION, and then click Configure alternate portal site URLs for intranet, extranet, and custom access.
